MADRID – It is Christmas Day, and 2022 is almost over. Therefore, it is the perfect time to reflect and look back. Traditionally, Google does this with an overview of the most frequently entered search terms. They give a nice picture of what has kept the population busy during the year.
But, what about search engine searches in Spain? What were the most frequently asked questions in the year in which the war in Ukraine, forest fires, drought, floods dominated the headlines. Google Spain has made them public.
The Google lists are based on search terms that had the highest spike this year as compared to the previous year.
The war in Ukraine has impacted many things over the last 10 months such as the rise in fuel and food prices. There have also been many important sporting events throughout the year.
But first, let´s look at the most general searches:

In the top news items searched for, not surprisingly, Ukraine was top followed closely by climate change issues. Although COVID was seemingly behind us, the Omicrom virus reared its head, then came the threat of monkeypox.
An indirect impact of the war in Ukraine, was the transport strike, and the rising cost of food and fuel. This was partially due to the cost of fuel making it impossible for truckers to transport goods to the supermarkets and other areas.
Lastly, the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8 was an extremely emotional event for most of the UK and other nations.
