Just like baby names, dog names are subject to trends and current affairs. Not long ago, some Spanish dog owners gave their dog the name Koeman. However, it was certainly not in the current Spanish top three. But which names are?

Pet owners often consider their pets to be members of the family. Therefore, it is important to give them an appropriate name; and especially with dogs, the name is essential for communication and interaction. Not just any name will do: it should be short, easy to pronounce, and in keeping with the animal’s character. Dogs are often named after mythical gods such as Thor or Zeus. But sometimes just a funny name like Socks.

Worldwide similarities

Dog names appear to be quite similar all over the world. This is evident from a study that pet insurance company Budget Direct conducted into the most popular dog names in various countries. Using data from public dog registries, animal welfare charities, and pet insurance companies, the company identified the top 10 male and female dog names in the participating countries.

Most frequent dog names in Spain

The top 3 most common names for female dogs in Spain are Luna, Nala, and Kira. Remarkably, the most popular dog name for males in Spain is Coco, followed by Thor and Max. With this, Spain has an original dog name at number 1 for male dogs. Among the male dog names, Max is the clear and undisputed global winner. According to the Budget Direct rankings, the name is twice as popular as number two, Charlie, and the most chosen in the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela, the Netherlands, Portugal, Croatia, and Greece. However, Charlie is more common in Canada, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand.

Spain is a little less original when it comes to the most chosen female name. Luna is not only the most popular in Spain but also the most chosen worldwide. The name is a favourite in Costa Rica, Portugal, Switzerland, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Israel, Serbia, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Other names that are popular worldwide are Bella and Lola. Egypt shines with originality: there, Vodka is the most common name for females.
