After an endless period of heat, it is currently slightly cooler in Spain. Unfortunately, this period is accompanied by heavy rain, storms and thunderstorms and with weather alerts in more than 10 provinces. However, this period of coolness also appears to be of very short duration in Spain.
The second half of August started differently in Spain than what was normal in recent weeks. In a large part of Spain the temperature is currently 3 to 5 degrees lower than usual. Unfortunately for the people who are getting used to a bit of cooling; the Aemet says that these lower temperatures will only last Wednesday and Thursday for the time being. It also remains warm along the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands; the temperature fluctuates around and sometimes slightly above 30 degrees.
However, the short period of cooling also brings other things with it: The Aemet also predicts storms and localised heavy rain showers, mainly in the northeast of Spain. Weather warnings have even been issued for Wednesday.
Weather alert due to rain, thunder, high waves and storm
In the north of Spain, code yellow applies to more than ten provinces because of heavy rain and high waves. More precisely, it concerns the provinces of A Coruña, Lugo, Asturias, Girona, Lleida, Teruel, Castellón, Valencia, Cantabria, Navarra, Biscay and GuipúzcoaIn. Code yellow applies in much of Catalonia due to heavy rain and storms. Code orange even applies in the provinces of Barcelona and Tarragona and for the entire island of Menorca.
Severe weather and flooding in province of Tarragona
On Tuesday there was already heavy weather in Tarragona. Wind, hail and a lot of rain caused local flooding and traffic congestion on the AP-7 near Tarragona. Four flights scheduled to land at Reus were diverted to Barcelona-El Prat. There was also a swimming ban along the coast of Tarragona.
The Aemet said that the stormy weather from yesterday will continue on Wednesday and will bring heavy thunderstorms and rainfall with 20 litres per square metre per hour.
Short-lived cooler period in Spain
However, the period of slightly milder temperatures seems to be very short-lived. The Aemet expects that the unstable weather will have disappeared after Friday and that temperatures will rise again after this. Consequently, from Saturday it will be barely cooler than 30 degrees throughout Spain and the mercury in the interior will rise again to almost 40 degrees.
