MADRID – On the 8th of October the Government Gazette (BOE) has published the new sales prices of tobacco in Spain of various brands. They are suggested by the corresponding manufacturers and importers. These new prices are added by the price increases of April 9 and have been agreed upon by the Commissioner for the Tobacco Market.
The BOE lists the prices in Spain of cigarettes, cigars, rolling tobacco and pipe tobacco. In the text, several dozen tobacco brands have undergone changes in their prices, determined on the basis of the manufacturer’s price and taxes, which differ depending on the product. Furthermore, these new tobacco prices are effective immediately.
The price increase of tobacco for sale to the public (RRP) affects only the tobacco in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. This new price update on October 8 affects the brands: Winston Red, Avo Xo Notturno Tubos, Davidoff year of the Rabbit and Zino Nicaragua Gordo. On average, in Spain the price of a pack is around €4.60 after the increase in recent years.
In addition, on the occasion of the Day Against Tobacco on 31 May, measures to curb smoking in Spain were made public. Under these measures, tobacco is banned at mass events such as football stadiums and concerts. Moreover, non-smoking areas are extended to the terraces of bars and restaurants. There is also the possibility to ban the consumption of tobacco in cars and private vehicles.
The product most consumed by smokers in Spain are cigarettes, ahead of rolling tobacco.
But the most controversial of these proposals is related to the price of tobacco in Spain. Experts propose raising the price of tobacco to €10 per pack. Consequently, this would mean an increase of 120% for some brands. At the moment, however, these measures are only proposals and the new tobacco prices are still far from €10.
