ÓRGIVA – Hiking in Spain is not without risks. Especially in mountainous areas. This is shown every year when rescue workers across Spain receive calls to rescue hikers and mountaineers from their perilous positions.
Sometimes they are late, such as last Monday when the bodies of two mountaineers were found lifeless in a ravine near the village of Trevélez in the province of Granada. This canyon is a complicated and dangerous area for mountaineers. The area in the La Alpujarra region (the southern flanks of the Sierra Nevada) was previously the scene of the deaths of other hikers. Granadadigital.es writes that three years ago a father and his son died here while practicing canyoning.
Black spot
This time it involved a man and a woman between the ages of 40 and 50. Their bodies were recovered from a pool at the ‘Puente de Palo. Moreover, experts and rescuers call this bridge a black point in the Trevélez ravine in the municipality of La Taha.
Guardia Civil sources have informed EFE that although the search was launched with helicopter support in the morning of Monday, the bodies could not be recovered until hours later. At around 3.00 pm, they were made available to the judicial police.
Causes of death and identities not yet known
The exact causes of death are unknown at this time. An investigation should clarify this. The identities of the two deceased hikers are also unknown. Sources at the Guardia Civil have confirmed the finding of the man and the woman. The theory that has gained traction is that of a possible accident in an area that is extremely difficult. Even for those experienced in canyoning!
Notification of loss
The 112 emergency service received a message on Sunday at 8.50 pm from a family member. They alerted the authorities that the two mountaineers had not returned. The coordination centre then alerted the fire brigade and the Guardia Civil, although only officers from the latter had to intervene to rescue the bodies.
The intervention was not easy because of the complicated access to the point of the ravine where these two lifeless people were.
