Considering winter should have started, it is extremely mild for the time of year in Spain. Winter coats were hardly needed during Epiphany. At the weekend, however, the stable weather of the past few weeks is set to completely change.
During the ‘Cabalgata de Reyes’, the children could enjoy and play with all the beautiful gifts and goodies that the three kings brought for them. The Spanish weather services had already announced before Epiphany that the weather would remain stable and mild. And, therefore, it was hardly necessary to put on a thick coat, scarf and mittens to welcome the three kings.
Friday turning point with code yellow due to dense fog
However, a change in the weather is imminent: During Epiphany (Friday January 6) it will remain dry everywhere. But in a large part of the interior it is already noticeable that it is a lot colder than in the extreme north and southern part of Spain. In Valladolid it could even freeze this afternoon. Meanwhile, temperatures in the rest of the interior fluctuate between 5 and 10 degrees.
For many provinces in central Spain, the Aemet has even issued code yellow weather warning for this Friday due to dense fog. These are some provinces in the regions of Aragon, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura and Galicia.
Weekend weather warnings
During the weekend, Spain will have to deal with very different weather than in recent weeks. Showers and thunderstorms will enter the country from Galicia very early in the morning on Saturday. In the course of this Saturday, these showers will spread from the northeast to the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula. In some cases, these showers will also be accompanied by thunder, as in Galicia and Badajoz.
Code yellow again applies on Saturday, but for other provinces and for other reasons. Some provinces in Aragon and Catalonia will continue to suffer from dense fog. Code yellow has been issued in a number of provinces of Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country and Galicia due to strong winds, high waves and in Galicia due to considerable rainfall.
Rain continues through Tuesday in Spain
On Sunday morning, the Aemet expects it to rain throughout Spain with a few exceptions along the Mediterranean coast. However, the heaviest weather warning with code orange applies on Sunday along the coast of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country due to extremely high waves.
An episode of heavy snowfall, such as last year with storm Filomena, is not expected in Spain for the time being. The Aemet expects the rain, which will fall almost throughout Spain over the weekend, to continue spread across the country until Tuesday.
