After a chaotic week with long queues and delayed and cancelled flights at Manchester airport -a week of significant activity due to Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee holidays-, TUI Airways, the British airline of the homonymous group, has announced the cancellation of more than 180 flights from May 31 to June 30.
This means suppressing 43 weekly flights, something defined by the company as an “incredibly difficult decision”. Furthermore, the measure will spoil the vacations of more than 37,000 tourists. It will also impact the hotels at the destination that awaited them. TUI has stated that affected customers will be contacted directly and offered an automatic refund, meaning no holidays for them.
From Manchester Airport itself, they have lamented the cancellations and have explained that the tourist giant is having problems operating due to the shortage of personnel both from TUI itself and from its ground service provider, Swissport, who is in charge of both the billing as luggage.
Similar problems on other airlines
TUI is not the only company that is experiencing a bumpy return to operations. And it is not only Manchester that is the only airport that suffers from queues and delays.
In fact, British Airways and EasyJet already experienced similar problems in April. Moreover, this week easyJet has cancelled 240 flights from London-Gatwick, from May 28 to June 6. However, in this case, the airline attributes the cancellations to a failure in the computer system.
