Spain’s tourism industry is asking the Prime Minister to save the country’s international image. Tourist organisations are demanding the Spanish government do more to let foreign countries know Spain is safe for tourists.
With Semana Santa and summer just around the corner, tourist organisations believe it is time for politicians to do more, showing foreign tourists it’s safe to holiday in Spain. The Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations (CEHAT) emphasises Spain is a safe destination and wants the Spanish government to spread this message as well.
Spanish politics not doing enough for tourism industry
CEHAT believes the government could do more to spread this message abroad. CEHAT Chairman Marichal said: “Now is the time to let tourists know we are ready to receive them safely. We can’t wait until June.” The chairman believes previous reports from the Spanish government about the vaccination campaign should be used to reassure tourists that it is safe here.
New life for Spanish tourism through European funds
CEHAT is one of the most active organisations working hard to reboot tourism in Spain. The confederation united several organisations under the European recovery plan funds, giving Spain a better chance of reviving the sector.
Long-haul for Spanish tourism
While there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel, the latest reports are far from positive. The Institute for Statistics of Spain (INE) announced that in January the number of hotel nights fell. That was the twelfth month in a row. Furthermore, the Spanish government said that despite the fact tourism is ready, it does not seem Semana Santa can be celebrated in a normal way.
