Spanish beaches are once again becoming overcrowded, despite new restrictions and the increase in the number of infected people. Nevertheless, on some beautiful Spanish beaches it is possible to keep a corona safe distance of one and a half metres.
Eltiempo has compiled a top ten, corona safe distance beaches list looking at the length of the beaches and the regularity of occupation.
Playa de Matalascañas – Playas de Doñana, Huelva
With a length of 35 km, the beach between Matalascañas and the Guadalquivir, in the province of Huelva, is one of the longest beaches in Spain. Furthermore, it is also one of the widest beaches in Spain, although this very much depends on the tide. The coastline consists of dunes. And there is vegetation behind the beach. Also the waves are usually not too high. However, here are few tourists because the beach is far from the built-up area and difficult to reach on foot.
Playa de Castilla – Huelva
The unspoilt Playa de Castilla is also located in the province of Huelva, between Mazagón and Matalascañas, and is almost 30 kilometres long. There are popular places including Arenosillo, Rompeculos, Asperillo and Mata el Difunto. However, in large parts there are no facilities, access – signposted and via footbridges and stairs – can sometimes be complicated. Moreover, the beach is up to 70 metres wide in some places, depending on the tide. At high tide, the cliff can be reached. The waves are moderate.
Playa de Cofete – Fuerteventura
Wild, mysterious and vast is Playa de Cofete. Furthermore, you can reach this fantastic beach located around 12 kilometres from the town of Morro Jable via the rugged peninsula of Jandía. Numerous volcanic footprints can be found in the sand. The beach is home to one of the most picturesque cemeteries in the Canary Island.
Playa de Nueva Umbría – Huelva
This beach in Huelva stretches for 12 kilometres along the Paraje Natural Marismas del Piedras y Flecha de El Rompido. Although despite its poor infrastructure, the beach is regularly visited by tourists. There is a car park and footpaths leading to the beach. Also there are boats that take you to an area where sun loungers, parasols and beach bars can be hired. Furthermore, the nudist area has been voted one of the best nudist beaches in Spain.
Playa de Punta Entinas-Sabinar Beach, Almería
This very quiet beach in the protected area of Punta Entinas Sabinar is located between the municipalities of El Ejido and Roquetas de Mar (Almería) in an area without buildings. The beach, with dark sand, is easily accessible on foot. It is 6.5 km long and about 80 metres wide.
Platja de la Roberta – Barcelona
This wide beach with few visitors is also known as Protegida sector I. It is characterised by dark golden sand and is located behind El Prat airport in an area with calm water but with strong waves. Platja de la Roberta is easily reached both on foot and by car. Additionally, in the same area as Platja del Prat are the beaches of Remolar, Can Camins, Naturista and La Ricarda – Ca l’Arana.
Playa de Castilnovo – Cadiz
Playa de Castilnovo is an unspoilt and seemingly wild beach where the waves and wind can be strong. As such, this is a windsurfers’ paradise! It is located near Conil de la Frontera, has fine golden sand, clean water and slopes gently. However the beach is easily reached by a long walk, either from El Palmar or from Conil de la Frontera.
Playa de Espigón – Huelva
This beach is located next to the breakwater named after Juan Carlos I in the port of Huelva. The beach has 3 kilometres of fine golden sand and is part of the Marismas del Odiel natural park. Its waters are calm and crystal clear. Moreover, together with the moderate waves, makes it a perfect resort.
Playa de Barra, Ponteceso-La Coruña
This beach has an impressive line of dunes almost two kilometres long and on average four hundred metres wide. The sand of the dunes climbs up the slopes of Monte Branco to the Alto de as Travesas. There you can enjoy phenomenal panoramic views of Ponteceso, Cabana and the mouths of the Corme and Laxe rivers.
Between the dunes of La Barra and next to Monte Branco, a footpath leads from Ponteceso to the beach of A Barra, ending up at Pedra da Serpe in Corme via Balarés beach
Playa las Amoladeras – Almería
Playa las Amoladeras, measuring over 3.5 kilometres in length, lies within the boundaries of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park in Almería. The protected beach – it was recently declared a Biosphere Reserve – is perhaps the largest stretch of unspoilt coastline in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. The beach is characterised by dark sand and gravel, moderate wave action and high winds. At the end at Torre García are the Roman remains of an old saltworks. There are many ways to remain a corona safe distance at your local beach too. Just be aware of any that feel overcrowded.
