A critically injured toddler, hit by a roof tile in a freak accident at a hotel on Mallorca, has died in hospital.
Sources at Mallorca’s Son Espases Hospital confirmed the death of the 14-month-old girl in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Roof tile dislodged by heavy rain?
The child suffered severe head injuries at midday on Friday. Her parents and she were sheltering from the rain under a hotel’s entrance porch.
A tile from the roof fell and hit the girl on the head causing severe injuries. Local reports said it is thought to have come loose because of the heavy rain.
She was stabilised at the scene before being rushed to paediatric intensive care at Son Espases Hospital. Civil Guard officers on the island are investigating. They will present a report to a local judge tasked with coordinating the probe.
As confirmed by the Hospital de Son Espases, the 14-month-old baby died around 01:00 on Saturday due to the injuries caused on Friday, in Cala Ratjada.
The girl, who was on holiday with her family, is believed to be Dutch.
