ONDARROA – The mural of ‘Lad rederas de Ondarroa‘, (the net-ties of Ondarroa) has been voted the third most beautiful in the world by the website streetartcities.com, which specialises in urban art.
The award-winning work is by Catalan artist Murales Lian. The image of two lived through hands, shown in black and white, tying a colourful fishing net is a tribute to the women (las rederas) of this Basque port town who devoted their lives to repairing the fishing nets. Not only does the artist want to make their work visible and dignified, but the mural also reflects how “they have kept and maintained the community together for centuries” with their nets, the jury of streetartcities.com emphasises.
The artwork can be seen on the side facade of a residential building on Antiguako Ama Avenue. “The fishnet is the symbol of unity and work, of effort and that is why it is the only element in colour,” explained the artist when she presented her work in July 2022.
Dutch work is the winner
Murales Lian’s work in Ondarroa competed with 100 other street artworks on display in 95 cities in 30 countries. The public vote favoured a work by a Dutchman. First place went to the Trashure mural in Tilburg by Studio Giftig, an artistic duo consisting of Niels van Swaemen and Kaspar van Leek. The drawing shows the benefits of sustainability and recycling.

Second place goes to the work that artist Martin Ron captured in the Central Library of the National University of Zamora, Argentina. This shows a student going through her notes. The work stands out for its realism and details and shows a scene that is very common among students in a catchy way.
