The millions of Game of Thrones fans around the world can indulge themselves: the series is back with a prequel called The House of the Dragon. These places in Spain can also be recognised in this predecessor of the HBO hit series as the shooting location for the series.

With the return of the Targaryen family, The House of the Dragon is arguably one of the most anticipated series since the resounding success of Game of Thrones. The House of the Dragon is the prequel set 200 years earlier to the events of Game of Thrones.

Spain popular as a shooting location for international films and series

Game of Thrones has brought millions of fans around the world. However, only a small proportion of fans know that different places in Spain have been chosen as a filming location. Spectacular castles, medieval villages and impressive hiking areas and nature in Spain can be seen in the first episodes of The House of the Dragon, which are now on HBO.

Cáceres as capital of King’s Landing

Connoisseurs, who have studied the ins and outs of the series, will see that the historic centre of Cáceres (Extremadura), and especially Plaza de Santa María, is the place where an important scene takes place. The Spanish city was also featured in Game of Thrones as the capital of King’s Landing in Westeros, King’s Landing. Not only the square can be seen, but also the Arco de la Estrella, calles Amargura and Olmo, la cuesta de Aldana and the squares of Conde de Canilleros, San Mateo, San Pablo and San Jorge.

Gardens of Santa Clotilde in Lloret de Mar

The Santa Clotilde gardens in Lloret de Mar (Girona) with the Mediterranean Sea in the background also provide enchanting scenes. This spot features King Viserys I, Princess Rhaenrya, Prince Daemon and Ser Otto Hightower. Shooting in the gardens took place in October and November 2021.

Castle of Calahorra as the eye-catcher of the series

Finally, the castle of Calahorra in Granada is recognized. Spain has many spectacular castles of which this is one. Most of the shooting at this castle took place in the dark. Quite a shame as there is less to see of the great views this Renaissance-style castle has to offer.

Trujillo returns in Game of Thrones prequel

Trujillo was also one of the shooting locations of Game of Thrones. In the series itself, only the castle on the Plaza Mayor could be seen. In front of House of the Dragon you can also see the square itself that has been transformed into a market in the centre of the city.

Game of Thrones popularity

The popular series Game of Thrones consists of 72 episodes spread over 8 seasons. Previous shooting locations have also taken place in Spain, including in Catalonia, Comunidad Valenciana, Castilla-La Mancha, Andalucia in the provinces of Almería, Córdoba and Seville, in Extremadura, the Basque Country and in Navarra. For now, only Cáceres, Lloret de Mar, Calahorra and Trujillo are known as places where the prequel was recorded. The makers don’t reveal much about the details of the upcoming episodes.

Each episode of the series is said to have cost around $20 million to film. The recordings took place not only in Spain, but also in the UK and Portugal.
