Which municipalities and neighborhoods in Spain are the richest and the poorest? In its latest report, the Institute of Statistics (INE) shows that the ten municipalities with the highest average net annual income per inhabitant are centered in just two Spanish provinces.
These conclusions are drawn by the Spanish INE in its most recent report ‘Indicadores Urbanos 2022’ (urban indicators). Furthermore, the report shows different rankings of Spanish municipalities with the highest and lowest average annual income per inhabitant.
Residents earn the most in these Spanish municipalities
People earn the most on average in the following areas;
- Pozuelo de Alarcón (€26,367)
- Boadilla del Monte MADRID (€21,976)
- Sant Cugat del Vallés (€21,122)
- Torrelodones (€20,810)
- Majadahonda (€20,652).
All the above mentioned municipalities are located in the province of Madrid except Sant Cugat del Vallés which is located in Barcelona.
These Spanish municipalities register the lowest annual incomes
On the other hand, the municipalities in Spain with the lowest annual income per inhabitant are also mentioned. This includes the following municipalities;
- Níjar in Almería (€7,097)
- Vícar in Almería (€7,634)
- Los Palacios y Villafranca in Seville (€8,054)
- Barbate in Cádiz (€8,126)
- Alhaurín el Grande in Málaga (€8,188) .
INE Spain looks beyond incomes of entire municipalities
Because there are many municipalities in Spain where there is a considerable degree of inequality between incomes, the INE has looked at the SCD neighbourhoods (Sub-City District) where a subdivision is made between specific neighbourhoods of entire municipalities. Consequently, in total, this concerns 526 SCD neighbourhoods that are compared with each other. Furthermore, all neighborhoods have a population of between 5,000 and 40,000 people.
Therefore, based on this comparison, the neighbourhoods with the highest net annual incomes are;
- El Viso (€42,107)
- Castellana (€37,212)
- Piovera (€36,928)
- Recoletos (€35,613)
All four noted above are in Madrid. This is followed by two other neighbourhoods in Barcelona;
- Pedralbes (€34,522)
- Las Tres Torres (€33,948)
However, the poorest neighbourhoods are in Polígono Sur in the Sur district;
- Seville (€5,666)
- Los Pajaritos and Amate in the Cerro-Amate district
- Sevilla (€6,042)
- Juan XXIII in Alicante (€6,272).
Highest unemployment rates in the south of Spain
Not only are the lowest incomes registered in the south of Spain, but eight of the ten places with the highest unemployment rate are located in Andalucia. The municipalities with the highest percentage of unemployed are;
- Linares in Jaén (30.9%)
- La Línea de la Concepción
- Cádiz (30.3%)
- Alcalá de Guadaira, Seville (26.9%).
In publishing this report, the INE states that some of the information on annual incomes from 2019 has been used because they do not want to include the effect of the pandemic.
