The sun – It´s an individual thing! Where do you fit in?

over exposure to the sun

Living in Spain with almost all-year-round sunshine, most of us absolutely adore the sun, but unfortunately, our relationship with it doesn´t always go well.

Understandably, spending more and more time in the sun has become a top priority for ex-pats and holiday-makers alike. So it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that Spain is the sun lover’s top European holiday destination. And the number one choice for people to relocate to.

However, even though the sun can improve your health and it can put you in a better mood, there are some downsides to spending too long unprotected from the sun’s UV rays.

You could be at risk from sunburn and, of course, skin cancer.

Some people are more susceptible to sun damage and skin cancer than others. And that’s down to what type of skin you have.

People who have incredibly pale or ivory skin, lots of freckles, fair or ginger hair, blue or green eyes are the most at risk. Whereas people with very dark skin are at the lowest risk. This is because people with darker skin pigmentation have more natural protection against the sun.  Children and in particular, babies are also more vulnerable to overexposure.

Take precautions

Also people with many moles or who are immunosuppressed (that is, they have less resistance to skin problems as a result of disease or use of particular drugs), or people with a family history of skin cancer.  People who spend a lot of time in the sun, whether it’s for work or play, are at increased risk of skin cancer if they don’t take the correct precautions.

Premature aging

Sunscreen use can help prevent premature aging and skin cancer by protecting you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender, or race.

The active ingredients in sunscreen work either by absorbing the sun’s UV radiation or by reflecting it.

A broad-spectrum sunscreen helps to protect against sunburn and skin cancer.

Remember also, don’t use sunscreens if they have gone past their expiration date.
