BALEARIC ISLANDS – The British media consider that the decree approved by the Balearic Government to curb drunken tourism “has not had a notable impact”.

This is according to queries made by the BerkshireLive newspaper to those responsible for tourist accommodation.

Time to curb drunken tourism

The decree came into force in January 2020. However, the effects of it had gone unnoticed due to the pandemic. The measures include the prohibition of consuming alcoholic beverages on the street between 10.00 pm and 8.00 am. Furthermore, it affects all-inclusive hotels located in the areas of Magaluf and Playa de Palma (Mallorca), and Sant Antoni (Ibiza). Clients here can only consume three free alcoholic drinks at lunch and another three at dinner.

Cheap alcohol and parties

The restriction is part of the plan of the Government of the Balearic Islands to improve the image of the destination and avoid excesses caused by alcohol during the holidays. However, Pepe Tirado, head of the Acotour tourism association, has indicated that the action must be more generalised. He assures that the tourism model “will only improve by putting an order in the streets”. With this, he is referring to the bars where consuming alcohol is very cheap and illegal parties held on ships.
