MADRID – The Spanish weather institute Aemet has confirmed that the mercury in Spain could rise above 45ºC in several zones by mid-next week.
The second heat wave of the year will begin this weekend and will last until the end of next week. By the middle of next week, maximum temperatures could rise to above 45ºC. In addition, the minimum temperatures do not fall below 25ºC. That means the nights will be tropical.
Heat on the whole mainland and the Balearic Islands
Rubén del Campo, spokesman for the AEMET, has confirmed that temperatures will be high next week across the entire peninsula and the Balearic Islands. The impending warm period will probably lead to officially the second heat wave of this season.
Canary Islands
The situation is different in the Canary Islands. The heat starts there this weekend. There will be a short break on Monday with a slight drop in temperatures, which will rise again from Tuesday.
At the moment, because there is atmospheric stability, the hot air flows are less and therefore the temperatures are regulated. The AEMET spokesperson has confirmed that temperatures in mainland Spain will gradually rise from next Monday or Tuesday.
The west of the peninsula will be the first to notice this rise, with a maximum of 35ºC in southern Galicia, in the extreme east of Castilla y León and in much of the Community of Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Andalucia .
Warm in catchments of large rivers
In the valleys of the Tagus, Guadiana and Guadalquivir rivers, temperatures will exceed 40ºC and reach 43ºC or more this Sunday in Badajoz.

In the Ebro Valley, a large part of the northern plateau will exceed 38ºC. At some points of the Miño and Tajo the temperature rises to 42ºC.
Tropical nights
The meteorological situation has tropical nights in store for much of the peninsula. It will be hot nights with temperatures above 20ºC and potentially scorching nights with minimums over 25ºC.

In addition, Aemet does not rule out that next Monday the temperature in the south of Spain will also rise as a result of hot air masses from Africa. In Andalucia, Extremadura and the Canary Islands there is already a yellow weather alert (risk) this weekend due to high temperatures.
