MADRID – The weather is crazy until the end of August. ‘Tiempo loco’ predicts the meteorological institute AEMET for the last days of August. As a result of a subtropical DANA, there will be strong winds, heat, rain and possibly even hail.
According to a spokesman for Aemet, the subtropical DANA enters Spain via the west of the peninsula. It’s a bag of cold air that will drag winds from the south, causing temperature swings, storms, and precipitation. There is no difference between a DANA — erroneously known as a ‘cold drop’ (gota fría) — and a subtropical DANA. Except for its origin. On the one hand, the subtropical DANA moved from the northwest of the Canary Islands to the Spanish mainland, but the origin, causes and consequences of the meteorological phenomenon are completely the same. Subtropical is only added to the name because this DANA originated in a subtropical location.
Drop in temperatures
As a result, from Thursday, temperatures will drop significantly in some parts of the country. However, before that drop in mercury, there are still areas in Spain that are subject to heat warnings on Wednesday. Fifteen communities, mainly inland, are on alert with code yellow for heat with maximums of 38 degrees or storms with rain, high winds and possibly hail. In the Canary Islands, the population is warned about coastal phenomena such as gusts of wind and high waves.
Also, in addition to the Canary Community, code yellow also applies to Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria, both Castillas, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Navarra, Basque Country, La Rioja and the Valencian Community, AEMET warns.
In Andalucia, it gets up to 38 degrees in the Guadalquivir Valley, in the province of Jaén and the countryside of Cordoba.
Hail
Aragon
In Huesca and on the banks of the Ebro (in Zaragoza) the maximum can reach 36 degrees. In addition, storms are also expected here with possible hail and strong wind gusts. Precipitation can reach up to 20 litres per square metre in an hour.
Cantabria and Asturias
Asturias, like all of Cantabria, is also alert to heavy precipitation of up to 15 litres per square metre in one hour and storms with a chance of hail and very strong gusts of wind.
Castilla y León
A maximum of 36 degrees is expected on the plateau of Valladolid and Zamora, in addition to storms that can bring hail and rain with accumulations of up to 15 litres per square metre in one hour.
Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha
Temperatures will reach 38 degrees in the Tagus Valley, in Toledo and Madrid, and the mercury will point to 37 degrees in almost the entire province, except in the mountains, where it will be a maximum of 34 degrees.
Catalonia
Catalonia is also on the alert for high temperatures of up to 36 degrees in Lleida and storms with a total rainfall of 20 litres per square metre in one hour and the possibility of hail, as well as very strong wind gusts.
Extremadura
It also gets very hot in Extremadura, with maximums of up to 38 degrees in almost the entire province of Badajoz.
Galicia
Here, the storms will bring precipitation with accumulations of 15 litres per square metre in an hour and possibly hail with very strong wind gusts.
Navarre and the Basque Country
In Navarre, as in the Basque Country, meteorologists warn of rain of up to 15 litres per square metre in an hour with storms that bring hail and very strong winds.
La Rioja and the Canaries
Also in La Rioja, the rain will be heavy and hail is not excluded, while the Canary archipelago is warned of coastal phenomena due to wind force 7 on the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
Valencia
In the Valencia region, temperatures can reach 36 degrees in Plana de Utiel and Rincón de Ademuz. Here, 20 litres of precipitation per square metre is also expected in one hour, with a chance of hail and strong wind gusts.
