Storm Cyril

WEATHER – The anticyclone in the Atlantic and Mediterranean will cause the formation of a number of storms, the first of which, storm ‘Cyril‘, will cause an unusual drop in temperatures for this time of year and snowfall at low altitudes.

This is according to the Spanish weather service Aemet, which has issued a weather alert valid until Monday. “Cyril’ will bring very cold air from the north towards the peninsula and the Balearic Islands. As a result, the temperature will drop significantly in the coming days; the values, both maximum and minimum, will remain unusually low for the time of year. Far below average.

Cold and precipitations

The very cold air entered the country from the far north on Thursday afternoon. From then. it moved on to the rest of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

On Friday 1 April, precipitation will fall in northern Spain, especially in the Cantabrian region and the Pyrenees. Due to the drop in temperatures, snowfall occurs first at 1,000 metres and later even in areas between 200 to 600 metres or 500 to 1,000 metres, depending on the area. Light to heavy frosts is also expected, with the mountains freezing the hardest.

Wind from the north

The wind will come from the north and blow moderately, with strong intervals in the northeast quadrant, the Balearic Islands and mountainous areas, and this will increase the feeling of cold. In addition, it will lead to poor coastal conditions in the Mediterranean areas.

Weather forecast for the weekend

During the weekend the precipitation will decrease gradually in a large part of Spain. Only in the north does precipitation continue to fall, where snow levels also remain low.

The persistent northerly winds decrease somewhat on Sunday, but strong gusts can occur in the northeast of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

Chances of frost remain high inland and in mountain areas, due to the combination of decreasing winds and the resolution of clouds. From Monday 4 April onwards, the outlook is still uncertain, but it seems likely that the cold air will retreat and end the bleak period.
