CÁCERES – It had already been warned by the Spanish weather institute Aemet. Strong winds with a lot of rain in the Extremadura region. The predictions came true and damage in Cáceres and Badajoz among others has been the result.
Flooding in Extremadura
In Badajoz, a storm broke out around three o’clock on Saturday afternoon. The fire brigade and other emergency numbers were inundated with calls that not all of them were able to answer. Residents reported damage to infrastructure, buildings, trees and vehicles.
Among the damage caused by the storm was the collapse of the mainmast carrying the Spanish flag on Sinforiano Madronero avenue. The mast is bent at the bottom and has fallen on the road. Some roofs of terraces have also collapsed, causing damage to cars parked nearby.

Damage in Caceres
In Cáceres, many trees were blown down and houses, garages and business premises were flooded. The water flowed down some streets in the historic centre – also named a UNESCO World Heritage Site – like a river. This was the case in Calle de Alzapiernas, Avenida Virgen de Guadalupe, Paseo de Cánovas and Avenida Alemania. The authorities have confirmed that no personal accidents have occurred. In Montijo, the bell of the San Pedro church has fallen due to the strong gusts of wind.

According to 112 Extremadura, 187 calls have been registered . Consequently, the police and fire brigade have taken action in 48 incidents. In addition, they had to help 36 times at various incidents such as flooding, fallen trees, blown away roof tiles or lean-to roofs and blocked passages. Five accidents occurred when the flowing water through the streets dragged vehicles off the road. There were 18 incidents in the city of Badajoz and 15 in the provincial capital of Cáceres; the rest, were in other locations, according to El Periodico de Extremadura.
The storm Béatrice puts 25 provinces on edge
After causing flooding in Extremadura Beatrice, the second storm named by Aemet is moving further north and will bring very strong gusts (more than 100 to 110 km/h) on Sunday, bringing sea storms and abundant rain.
The weather institute warns 25 provinces of 12 autonomous communities with code yellow (risk) and codes orange (important risk). Burgos, León, Palencia and La Rioja are particularly at risk due to wind speeds of up to 110 kilometres per hour. Huesca, Asturias, Cantabria, Zamora, Soria, Segovia, Salamanca, Ávila, Guadalajara, Girona, Lleida, Cáceres, La Coruña, Pontevedra, Lugo, Madrid, Navarra, Álava, Guipúzcoa and Vizcaya are code yellow due to the wind.
