MADRID – Spain is currently undergoing several changes to animal rights laws. And, as such is introducing new rules on dog care in Spain.
The new rules include the maximum length of time a dog can be left on its own. This is a legal limit of 24 hours. Also, there is a requirement for a minimum amount of space needed per dog.
No animals for sale in pet shops
A list will be compiled of owners who are banned from having animals due to animal abuse convictions. And pet shops are no longer able to sell pets (with the exception of fish)
Dog care training course
However, the change that will affect all people considering adding a dog to their family is the introduction of a dog training course. This is to ensure new dog owners take social responsibility for their pets. Dog owners will also be required to purchase liability insurance for their animals. This is to ensure potential owners are more aware of everything that is involved in caring for a dog.
Euthanasia
Furthermore, a healthy dog can no longer be put to sleep at the request of its owner just because it is no longer wanted. The only time this option is available is if there is no other way to save the animal due to ill health. This will also apply to dog shelters, even if they are overcrowded.
Animals in captivity must also be kept in an environment as close as possible to their natural habitat.
