UK driving licences to be exchanged by 31st December

This week the Cabinet agreed to an extension of certain measures for British citizens following the Brexit transitional period. Among them is the deadline for British driving licences to be converted to the Spanish equivalent.

Earlier this week, the Spanish Cabinet approved the extension of some of the articles of RDL 38/2020, of December 29. These are measures adopted to adapt the status of the UK to third country status.

In particular, the articles extended were 11, 12 and 15 which relate to healthcare, driving licences and education.

Driving licences

The agreement stated British citizens resident in Spain could not use their UK driving licence after 31st October 2021.

This has now been extended for a further two months. The new deadline is 31st December 2021, by which time holders of British driving licences must have exchanged for a Spanish driving licence. Failure to do so means you are driving illegally in Spain.

Healthcare

The permission for reciprocal access to healthcare with a refund guarantee, which currently only applies in Gibraltar, is extended from November 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021.

A cooperation agreement has already been reached with the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland in the matter of Social Security.

Education

The regime applicable to students from the educational systems of the United Kingdom is extended. This means students can continue to access procedures to the Spanish university for the academic years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024, on the same terms provided for students from education systems in EU Member States.
