MADRID – As the demand for air travel continues to rise, the start of the summer means full reopening of all terminals of Spanish airports. Furthermore, this summer, Turespaña predicts a sale of 69% of the number of airline tickets as for summer of 2019.
The Spanish airport manager AENA reports that all Spanish airport terminals are open again. This is according to the Hosteltur.com website on Monday morning. Due to the pandemic, many airports decided to close some terminals since March 2020 due to the low activity.
Demand for flights to Spain increased
However, the vaccination developments in all countries, and the introduction of the Covid certificate in Europe has helped. Together with the lifting of mobility restrictions in Spain, these are the main three reasons for the increase in demand.
Spanish airports receive certificate for safe hygiene measures
According to Hosteltur, 17,209 flights were registered in Spain in the first two weeks of July. Of which 8,053 were domestic and 9,156 international. Furthermore, in April 2020, AENA introduced safety protocols for travellers. These include the provision of alcoholic hand gel, mandatory use of face masks, safety screens, mandatory walking routes and other measures to avoid mutual contact and prevent contamination.
Furthermore, thirty AENA airports in Spain have received a certificate from the Airports Council International (ACI), the worldwide umbrella organisation of airport companies. This states that an airport complies with all health measures recommended by various aviation and health organisations, including the WHO.
Expected recovery by air travel Spain: 69% from summer 2019
HostelTur also announced on Monday that more than 23.6 million flight tickets have been sold for the period from July to September. These numbers were reported by airlines offering international flights to Spain. While this is 69% of the number of tickets sold in the summer of 2019, it represents a 124% increase in the number of tickets sold in the summer of 2020.
These figures emerged from Turespaña’s latest report. Most bookings came fromThe United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France and the Netherlands. The biggest drop in ticket sales to Spain comes from China, the United States and Russia.
