MADRID – Spain and ten other countries are calling for an accelerated introduction of green energy and an interconnected energy market within the European Union. This is in response to Russian aggression in Ukraine and to reach climate goals by achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
Eleven European member states want to accelerate the transition to green energy, renewable gas, and more economical energy consumption. They want to create an open and interconnected energy market within Europe. Consequently, this will reduce dependence on fossil fuels from Russia.
Europe is getting ready for ultimate climate goal: climate-neutral by 2050
The eleven countries committed to this are Austria, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Latvia, the Netherlands, Sweden, Slovenia, and Spain. Therefore, the countries are pushing to speed up a package of legislative measures known as Fit For 55.
This package was already presented within the EU in July last year. It means greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. The package consists of ten legislative proposals, which should ensure the realisation of the objectives of the Green Deal. The ultimate goal: a climate-neutral continent by 2050.

The eleven countries want to accelerate the negotiations on this package so that the transition to clean energy can start. “The transition to green energy must be affordable and safe. Moreover, so that consumers are protected from rising energy prices and the climate from further pollution,” the presidents of the countries report. Fit For 55 is also an ‘efficient response to Russian aggression and offers a way out of the crisis by creating many new jobs’.
However, for the time being, the Member States are talking about the existing emissions trading system, an instrument to ensure a cost-efficient transition to clean energy. This is done by diversifying the EU’s energy supply to avoid the use of fossil fuels. Under the current European Commission proposal, the Fit For 55 package will reduce EU gas energy consumption by 30% by 2030 and reduce dependence on Russian gas.
