MURCIA – The Spanish government will finance 50% of the costs for Interrail across Europe this summer for young people between the ages of 18 and 30. The measure is valid from June 15 to September 15.

This was announced by the president of the government, Pedro Sánchez, on Saturday 6 May during an election meeting of the PSOE in Murcia. Sánchez also expressed his support for the socialist candidate for the presidency of the region, José Vélez.

Promotion of travel and tourism among young people

This measure is intended to promote travel in Europe and Spain. And also to promote the tourism and cultural sector among young people. “We will get a European Interrail and we will also get a Spanish Interrail. This is so that our young people can get to know all the regions of Europe and this country. This government is committed to young people, their culture and their education,” said Sánchez.

Discount on trains and buses and high-speed trains

The government will also apply discounts on state-dependent trains and buses, with a 90% discount. Furthermore, there will also be a 50% discount on high-speed trains. These measures are expected to be approved on Tuesday 10 May during the next Council of Ministers.

Statistics from Interrail

Interrail statistics show that the train companies participating in the service sell around 600,000 tickets annually across Europe to customers of all ages. Young people between 12 and 27 years old currently receive a 25% discount on the general rate. The Interrail network consists of 40,000 train stations in 33 countries.

Promoting culture and education among young people

Sánchez emphasised during his announcement that there are many young people who “know more about Europe than about their own country”. Through these measures, the government hopes to contribute to the promotion of culture and education among young people and to enable them to discover different parts of Europe and Spain.

Interrail

Interrail is a popular and affordable means of rail travel for young people in Europe. The Interrail pass system gives young people the opportunity to travel unlimited by train through different European countries for a certain period of time, usually between 1 and 3 months, and for a fixed amount.

The Interrail network includes more than 40,000 train stations in 33 countries in Europe, making it easy for travellers to explore different parts of the continent.
