The ‘guerreras’, the Spanish handball ladies team, came a step closer to the world championship on Tuesday evening. After a difficult start and a 0-4 deficit, the Spanish team defeated the Germans in their own country on Tuesday 26-21. Even with this latest victory, Spain could still have a lot to lose in this championship.

Exactly two years ago, at the previous world championship in Japan in 2019, Spain was also successful. At that time, the ladies had to compete against the Netherlands in the final. However, after a blood-curdling match, Spain had to settle for silver. This time, however, titleholder Netherlands recently lost 34-37 to Norway during the group stage. Therefore, they were eliminated from the World Cup.

Spain never before world champion handball

If Spain succeeds in winning the semi-finals on Friday, then the handball ladies can prepare for another World Cup final on Sunday 19 December. Although Spain has been increasingly successful in this sport in recent years, previously, Spain has only managed to capture a silver and bronze medal. But, with Spain hosting the competition, perhaps this will help make the difference to the Spanish handball ladies.
