Spain England Quarter-finals

FOOTBALL – The quarter-finals of the European Championship 2022 was scheduled for July 20 between England and Spain. England began the game as favourites, however Spain dominated almost the entire game. In the end, England needed an extra time to get Spain out of the European Championship.

England recorded the biggest European win ever during the previous match against Norway. The England ladies finished the group stage with 14 goals and not a single goal against. This created enormously high expectations of the group of the Dutch Sarina Wiegman.

However, Spain also achieved great results during the European Championship. The Spanish ladies won in the group stage against Finland (4-1) and Denmark (1-0) but had to lose out to Germany (0-2).

Spain in the lead just after a quiet first half

Already after 7 minutes in the first half, manager, Wiegman was cheering along the line because of a goal. However, it was immediately disallowed for offside. Spain held their own against England for a long time, but both teams were unable to score in the first half. Shortly after the break, Esther González managed to score a nice goal after a cross from Athenea del Castillo.

England managed to draw in the last minutes

Sarina Wiegman reacted immediately after Spain’s lead and refreshed part of her attack with two new players. For a long time it looked like Spain would become the country that would put the mighty England out of the European Championship. However, England scored the equaliser 5 minutes before time. Therefore, the 1-1 tie meant extra time.

Spain has to say goodbye to European Championship

Less than 6 minutes after the whistle of extra time, Georgia Stanway gave England the lead. Spain definitely had the energy to ensure a draw or even a win. However, the Spanish ladies were unable to score. With a 2-1 score, England managed to conquer a spot in the semi-finals of the European Championship. England’s win meant Spain’s departure from the 2022 European Women’s Championship on Wednesday evening.
