MADRID – Spain sets up the Association of Cultural Routes to better promote five major travel routes through Spain. It hopes to attract more visitors. The association will promote the historical, cultural, artistic and natural Spanish heritage internationally.

The main goal of the new Association of Cultural Routes in Spain is to promote internationally the historical, artistic and natural legacy different cultures have imprinted in Spain over the centuries.

On April 12, the directors of the managing entities of the five routes held the founding meeting. Through them, tourist sites and monuments of eleven autonomous communities are represented: Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Extremadura and the Region of Murcia.

Five cultural routes

The five routes have been conducting joint promotional activities since 2015. The establishment of the new partnership is therefore a logical consequence of that collaboration. “Today’s event is very important as it is a culmination of many years of work and opens the door to a powerful tool to promote destinations, especially inland,” said Rafael Pacheco, President of Cultural Routes of Spain.

It concerns the following routes:

  • Routes past 112 prehistoric rock paintings and archaeological sites that bear witness to the first inhabitants of Spain ‘Caminos de Arte Rupestre Prehistórico’;
  • The route that follows the Spanish Silver Route from Seville to the Spanish north coast: ‘Ruta Vía de la Plata’;
  • The ‘Camino del Cid‘ along the medieval roads and places visited by the Spanish knight El Cid Campeador during his heroic forays through the country;
  • The routes spread throughout Spain around the heritage of Charles the Fifth ‘Rutas de Carlos V‘;
  • The route ‘Caminos de Pasión‘ combines history, artistic heritage, traditions, gastronomy, crafts and nature and leads through 10 Andalusian villages to the heart of Andalusia.
