WEATHER – The peak of the heatwave in Spain will be reached today, Wednesday 15 June. Although it was previously expected to become cooler from Thursday, the scorching heat will continue until at least Saturday. Will the approaching DANA provide coolness after the weekend?
In 42 provinces it will not be cooler than 34 degrees in the coming days. And in 20 Spanish provinces it will even be warmer than 40 degrees. Extremely high temperatures of 42 degrees and higher are expected today in the following vicinities;
- Valle del Guadalquivir
- Toledo
- Granada
- Sevilla
- Albacete.
Weather alerts in almost all Spanish regions due to high temperatures
The heat has now spread over a large part of the peninsula. Warnings (code yellow and orange) have been issued for all regions in Spain, except Asturias and the Canary Islands, and are expected to be in effect until Saturday.
Code orange, with temperatures near or above 40 degrees, will be issued for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in much of Catalonia, Aragon, Extremadura, Madrid, Castile-La Mancha, Murcia and northern and western Andalucia.
Worrying that heat wave comes early and lasts long in Spain
Spain is used to a lot of heat, but that this comes so early in the year is worrying. Temperatures are currently on average 12 degrees above what is normal for this time of year. Normally, it is only locally above 40 degrees for a longer period in July and August.
According to a meteorologist from Meteored, it is not so much the record temperatures that are a problem, but the fact that these high temperatures occur almost all over Spain and last for a longer period of time.
Will DANA provide coolness in Spain this weekend?
The Aemet expects a DANA, an isolated high-level atmospheric depression, to pass through Portugal over much of Spain on Saturday. Weather experts are not yet sure how this will play out and whether it will actually follow the expected line over Spain. However, Aemet believes it is likely that it will bring in a load of cold air in or just after the weekend, causing cooling.
