WEATHER – Almost all of Spain will experience a heat wave this weekend. Weather service Aemet issues weather alerts for more than ten regions in Spain. In the southern part of Spain it rises to 40 degrees with some peaks of more than 44 degrees in the Guadalquivir.
The supply of warm air reached the Iberian Peninsula on Thursday. Furthermore, the heat wave will peak on Sunday with record temperatures of up to 44 degrees. As such, Aemet is issuing weather alerts for more than ten regions, including code orange for Andalucia, Castilla La-Mancha, Extremadura and Madrid. Residents of these regions will have to deal with extreme heat in the next few days.
Friday code orange due to strong wind
Today, the Spanish weather service has issued code orange for the extreme tip of Cádiz due to a strong easterly wind. Wind speeds can reach 100 km/h between Friday and Saturday.
Saturday and Sunday around 40 degrees in southern part of Spain
On Saturday, several places in the southern part of the country will be in code orange. This is due to temperatures expected to exceed 40 degrees. Extreme heat is expected in the countryside of Córdoba, Cuenca del Genil in Granada, Andévalo y Condado in Huelva, Jaén, Seville, Badajoz, Ciudad Real and Toledo. In these areas the temperatures are between 40 and 42 degrees.
Sunday code orange with extreme heat in southern Spain
On Sunday, Aemet expects the highest temperatures will be reached. Therefore, code orange is in force for Cádiz, Cordoba, Granada, Huelva, Jaén, Sevilla, Zaragoza, Badajoz, Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Toledo and the south of Madrid with temperatures up to 42 degrees. However, in the Guadalquivir, peaks above 44 degrees are even forecast.
Code yellow for seven Spanish regions
For some municipalities of seven Spanish regions, code yellow is also predicted for temperatures up to 38 degrees. This applies during the weekend to Aragon, Castile and León, Catalonia, Murcia, Valencia, Basque Country and Cantabria.
Advice Spanish government during heat wave in Spain
When code yellow and orange is issued due to high temperatures, the Ministry of Health advises to take precautions. Therefore, drink extra water and avoid direct exposure to the sun when it is most powerful. Vulnerable target groups, such as the elderly and small children, must be extra careful during the hottest part of the day. Additionally, physical exertion is not recommended at this time.
On Tuesday, July 13, Aemet expects the heat wave to end and a significant temperature drop is expected.
