On January 27, the corona incidence fell for the fourth consecutive day in Spain. The number of infections and deaths is still high, but there is light at the end of the tunnel with stable hospitalisations and high vaccination rates.
Despite the fact that many people are still infected every day (130,888 on Thursday), the incidence decreased by 55 points to 3,139 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants. However, with this figure, Spain still turns dark red, which means the risk of contamination is ‘very high’.
Record number of infections in Spain by Omicron
That the Omicron variant is more contagious than all previous variants can clearly be seen from the incidence. At the peak of the sixth corona wave in Spain, the incidence was more than 3,400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. During the third peak, exactly a year ago, the record only reached 900 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Children under 12 are still the group with the highest infection rates. The incidence in children under this age stood at 5,782 cases per 100,000 on Thursday. This figure appears to be slowly stabilising.
Hospital figures in Spain stable and falling slightly
According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Health, hospital admissions have remained more or less the same in recent days and are currently slowly declining. At present, 14.8% of hospital beds are occupied by covid patients, compared to 22.1% of intensive care beds.
Deaths still high, but falling significantly in Spain
176 deaths were reported on Thursday. Last Tuesday, 382 more deaths were reported. While the number of deaths has fallen sharply for several days, it has not fallen below 100 since January 10. Since the start of the pandemic, 92,767 deaths have been recorded in Spain, although the real number is now known to be much higher.
How far is Spain with vaccinations?
Spain still shows a fairly high vaccination rate. According to the figures of January 27 from Public Health, 92.7% of Spaniards over the age of 12 have had one shot and 90.7% have already been fully vaccinated. Since December, Spain has started vaccinating children between the ages of 5 and 11. Meanwhile, 54.1% of this target group has received at least one shot.
