Spain extends travel ban for travellers arriving from outside the Schengen area and European Union until April 30th. At the same time, other authorities immediately introduce restrictions on air traffic to and from Spain.
The Ministry of the Interior announced on Monday an extension of the travel ban for travellers arriving from outside the EU and non-Schengen countries. The Official Gazette (BOE) of Spain published the information on the same day.
Spain extends travel ban for fifth time
The travel ban was imposed by Interior Minister Grande-Marlaska from the beginning of July 2020. After several extensions, it would have expired on March 31, 2021. Travel restrictions from these areas to Spain are now being extended for a fifth time.
From today, Spain now regulates its land borders, requiring negative PCR tests before allowing entry.
Spanish government provides some exceptions
A few exceptions included in the BOE are travel for essential reasons, such as work and medical. Exceptions are also made for various professional groups such as healthcare personnel and medical researchers, people who work in transport, students, diplomats and people who travel to Spain for health reasons.
Spain lifts other travel restrictions
On the other hand, the Spanish government is lifting the temporary road restriction from Schengen area through the checkpoint with the territory of Gibraltar with effect from March 30. Earlier this week, Spain decided to lift the restrictions for travellers from the United Kingdom. However, while travel resumes, entry is subject to ‘essential reasons’ criteria.
Other countries impose travel restrictions to and from Spain
On Monday, the Spanish Embassy in Morocco announced flights between Morocco, Spain and France will be cancelled from Tuesday, March 30. Moroccan authorities took this decision in view of the increasing infections in the two European countries.
