WEATHER – Spain expects a true ‘polar storm’ in the first week of November. Temperatures will drop significantly from Tuesday. the Spanish weather service, Aemet predicts extreme weather until the weekend with the first frost, local occurrence of DANAs, and snowfall.

The arrival of a mass of polar air and the turning of the wind causes a significant drop in temperatures across Spain in early November. The first week of November will be considerably colder with temperatures that are 5 to 10 degrees colder than normal for this period.

Change in weather in Spain already noticeable at the end of October

The change in air supply already caused intense showers in various parts of Spain in the last weekend of October. The Spanish weather service Aemet predicts localised intense rainfall for Wednesday with thunderstorms in the north of Galicia, the Cantabrian regions, the west of the Pyrenees, and some showers in the Mediterranean.

From this day on, it will be considerably colder throughout Spain, especially inland. Then, from Tuesday to Wednesday, the wind turns north, causing maximum temperatures of up to 10 degrees in the northern part of Spain and up to 20 degrees in the southern part.

First snowfall forecast in Spain this week

The Aemet expects moderate snowfall in the mountains of northern Spain from 1,000 to 1,200 metres above sea level. On Thursday, temperatures in the regions of Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, and Aragon will drop below freezing. And snow is even expected in areas above 1,000 metres.

Local DANAs predicted in southern part of the Mediterranean region

The day will also start with frost on Friday. In addition to the north of Spain, the Balearic Islands, the coast of Valencia, and parts of the south-east of Spain will also experience heavy showers. This can result in so-called DANAs, a weather phenomenon that is accompanied by very heavy rainfall and storms and often with wind speeds between 100 and 200 km/h. Whereas, in the northern part of the Mediterranean, this can result in snowfall.

For the coming weekend, Aemet expects slightly calmer weather with only light precipitation in the north of Spain and the Balearic Islands. The cold temperatures will mainly persist at night, but during the day they will slowly rise again.
