On February 28, the online portal will be presented where people can learn more about the Spanish past from more than 150,000 geographic locations and characters. The online portal, which can be found through this website, was designed by the Real Academia de la Historia (RAH). The launch of this is being presented this morning at the Royal Palace in Madrid. Both the King and Queen of Spain will be present.

Google maps on Spain and its history

This website is considered a technological milestone for the knowledge of Spain’s past and present. Spain is the first country in the world to present a virtual space in which so much knowledge is stored.

How does the website work?

The home page is a world map and when you enlarge the image you see pins with places where important events took place. These date back to 1,350,000 BC and continue to the present day. It is not only limited to Spain itself. But also to other places in the world that were at one time under Spanish rule.

Thumbtacks can be zoomed in and when you click on them, a window will appear with important people or events that can be clicked through. This new website builds on what is already included in the Spanish biographical dictionary of the RAH, which was launched in April 2018. All historical events and persons are linked on this website so that they can be placed in the right context.

At the bottom of the page you can also search by name, period, place and theme. Filters can also be applied to refine search results. The website is available in both Spanish and English. Furthermore, visitors can also contribute their own ideas to improve the website.

Today at 10.30 am the website was unveiled in front of the King and Queen of Spain and several ministers. After that it will be accessible to the rest of the world.
