Three weeks after the start of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, Spain will go home with a silver medal and three Olympic diplomas. In total, the medal tally stands at five medals for Spain after 86 years of the Olympic Games.
The proud owner of Olympic silver belongs to Queralt Castellet, the Spanish snowboarder from Sabadell. She finished in second place in the halfpipe section. This was also Spain’s biggest achievement in the Chinese capital.
Spain will also receive three Olympic diplomas in Beijing
Nevertheless, in addition to the silver medal, Spain also obtained three Olympic diplomas. The Olympic diploma is a certificate that is awarded to the participants of the Olympic Games with a certain classification. Since 1984, everyone who has finished in the top eight has been awarded an Olympic diploma.
The Spanish athletes who received the diplomas belong to Javier Lliso, who participated in the freeskiing section. He finished sixth in this event. Lucas Eguibar also received a diploma after his seventh place in the snowboard cross-section. The skating pair Olivia Smart and Adrian Diaz also received an Olympic diploma. They came eighth place in the figure skating/dance section.
Spain may add fifth Olympic medal
Given Spain’s history at the Winter Olympics over the past 86 years, earning one silver medal is a highlight. Although it seems a low score compared to the Netherlands’ seventeen medals – including eight golds – Spain has only won four medals in the past nine decades. A fifth may be added after the 2022 Games. Spain can be proud but unfortunately failed to achieve the goal of surpassing the last Games in Pyeongchang – to achieve two medals.
Skating couple will carry the Spanish flag during the closing ceremony OS2022
This afternoon, on Sunday at 1.00 pm, the closing ceremony will be held in Beijing, after which the Olympic Games will officially come to an end. Spanish figure skating pair Olivia Smart and Adrian Diaz has been appointed from the Olympic squad to carry the flag of Spain during the closing ceremony.
