MADRID – In one day, the number of new corona cases in Spain has fallen significantly. This doesn’t seem like a spontaneous outlier down; the corona incidence has been falling since the end of July. With an average of 276 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, Spain is almost leaving the ‘extreme risk zone’.
The Spanish Ministry of Health reported 7,115 new corona cases on Thursday. While this number is still high, it is a staggering 3,000 fewer than the day before.
The average number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past 14 days follows the same trend. On Thursday, the corona incidence was 276 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a whopping 15 points less than Wednesday. If this trend continues, and Spain falls below 250 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, then there will be no more ‘extreme risk’ when it comes to the number of infections in the short term.
Situation in four Spanish regions still worrying
However, the situation in Extremadura, the Balearic Islands, the Basque Country, and La Rioja is still serious. The average incidence in the last three regions is still well above 300 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and in Extremadura, the incidence is even close to 500 cases.
How many beds are corona patients in Spain occupied?
There are currently 7,368 people hospitalised across Spain due to a Covid-19 infection. There are also 1,701 people in various IC departments in Spain. The occupancy rate of corona patients in Spanish hospitals is 6.28% at the time of writing. This percentage is slightly higher for IC departments, namely 18.54%. However, in Madrid and Catalonia is the situation worrying with occupancy rates above 30%.
Deaths in Spain on an increasing trend
The only figure that is increasing is the number of deaths from Covid-19. In last Thursday’s report, an average of 171 people died on a daily basis. This figure is higher than the 133 deaths recorded a week earlier.
How far is Spain with vaccinations?
Currently, 76.1% of the Spanish population has been vaccinated at least once. 67.9% of people in Spain have already been fully vaccinated. And nearly 92% of people over 40 have been fully vaccinated with one of the corona vaccines. Therefore, the focus is currently on vaccinating young people as soon as possible. Not only because the incidence is highest within this group (570 cases per 100,000 people), but especially with a view to the start of the school year from 7 September.
By yesterday (Thursday), nearly 66% of Hispanic teens have received a shot, and more than 20% of 12 to 19-year-olds have already been fully vaccinated.
