MADRID – It seems only a matter of days before the corona situation in Spain can officially be classified as ‘medium risk’. Although the numbers are falling every day, there is a clear dichotomy between the over-30s and the Spaniards under 30.
On Tuesday evening, the Ministry of Health released the most recent figures. According to official figures, Spain has 4,892,640 people infected with Covid-19 and 85,066 deaths. Although in reality, the number will be much higher.
The corona incidence, the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past 14 days, is a good indicator of the current situation in Spain. On Tuesday, it fell further to 160 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
From medium to extreme risk by Spanish region
The incidence decreased in almost all regions, but especially in Extremadura, Catalonia and Cantabria. Currently, officially there is only an extremely high risk in Extremadura with an incidence of 282 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In Asturias, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, and Valencia, the incidence has fallen so much that these regions are now classified as ‘medium risk’.
Most infections among people under 30 in Spain
The downward trend can also be seen in the number of new infections per age group in Spain. The 12 to 19-year-olds are still the group in which the most infections occur. Currently, the incidence for this target group is set at 269 cases per 100,000, a figure that was twice as high a week ago. There is, however, a dichotomy in the incidence among the over 30s (average 133 cases per 100,000) and the Spaniards under the age of 30 (average 222 cases per 100,000).
Vaccination causes dichotomy in infection rates
The main reason for this is the progress of the vaccination campaign. Meanwhile, 70% of all people in their thirties in Spain have been fully vaccinated. Among the over 40s, this percentage is even above 92%. Nevertheless, the vaccination of young people is also progressing: More than 65 percent of the twenty-somethings and more than 45% of the teenagers in Spain have already received the full dose of one of the vaccines.
IC occupation Spain officially no longer a high risk
According to official figures, pressure on the ICUs in Spain is no longer high risk. For the first time since the end of July, the occupancy rate falls below 15%. On average, 14.74% of all ICU beds in Spain are occupied with Covid patients. Pressure remains high only in the regions of Madrid and Catalonia with occupancy rates above 25%.
