MADRID – The average number of corona cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the past 14 days fell to 242 on Monday. That means that Spain has on average entered the ‘high risk’ phase. However, nine Spanish regions are still in the highest extreme risk phase.
A week ago, the corona incidence was 317, no less than 75 points higher than was registered this Monday. The Ministry of Health in Spain presented the most recent corona figures on Monday evening.
Spain out of ‘extreme risk phase’
It is the first time since July 6 that the risk level for Spain has been set at high. In accordance with the guidelines agreed within the Inter-Territorial Council, this means that a country registers between 150 and 250 cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last two weeks. When Spain falls below 150 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, there will be an ‘average risk’.
Nine Spanish regions still ‘extreme risk’
The Spanish regions with the highest corona incidence are Extremadura with 468 cases and La Rioja with 320 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. In these two regions, along with seven other regions, there is still officially ‘extreme risk’. The Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castile-La Mancha, Castile and León, Galicia, Madrid and the Basque Country, along with La Rioja and Extremadura, are still in the highest risk phase.
Spanish teenagers still hardest hit by Covid-19
The Ministry also monitors the figures per age group. Teenagers (12 to 19-year-olds) are still the hardest hit by Covid-19. An incidence of 417 applies here, while in people in their twenties there is an average of 312 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The reason for this is that of all age groups in Spain, the vaccination rate among teenagers is the lowest. More than 25% of teenagers in Spain have now been fully vaccinated.
Pressure on hospitals in Spain is steadily decreasing
The declining figures are also reflected in hospitals in Spain, although this decline is somewhat flatter. At the moment, 6.07% of hospital beds are occupied with corona patients. Madrid (11.54%) and the Basque Country (8.64%) have the highest occupancy rates in Spain.
The number of people in intensive care units in Spain also fell further on Monday. Currently, 18.04% of ICU beds are occupied by Covid-19 patients. Catalonia (33.74%) and Madrid (31.69%) are the regions in Spain whose IC units are under the most pressure due to the number of corona patients requiring intensive care.
