MONACHIL – After two tough years due to the Covid-19 pandemic and additional travel restrictions, the Sierra Nevada (Granada) ski area has had a very good 2021/2022 season.
The ski resort in Pradollano (Monachil) closed for the season on Sunday afternoon, April 24 at 5,00 pm. Furthermore, it has informed TouriNews that this was the best season in its history in terms of revenue.
According to Cetursa (the management company responsible for the ski area), turnover for the 21/22 season stands at €45 million. That is more than the €41.8 million that was converted during the 18/19 season before the corona pandemic.
Consequently, Juan Bravo, Minister of Finance and European Financing of the Junta de Andalucía made an official statement. Moreover, he explained that now the season is over, improvement work on the ski facilities in Granada will begin. Moreover, the Emile Allais and Veleta II chairlifts are being replaced and the Borreguiles area is being reorganised. Furthermore, people arrive here by cable car from Pradollano, and several restaurants and ski schools are located here.
The interventions involve an investment of €21 million. This will be partly covered by European funds and partly by Cetursa’s own funds. which will be backed by European funds and Cetursa’s own funds.
Skiing in Southern Spain
Winter sports enthusiasts will have to wait again until the end of November before they can put on their skis or snowboard again in the southernmost ski area in Europe, Sol y Nieve, where the ski season lasts the longest. Under ‘normal’ weather conditions it is possible to ski from the end of November to ski well into April.

The ski village of Pradollano is located at an altitude of 2,100 metres. But the ski area itself extends to 3,300 metres. There you are just below the top of the Veleta, the second-highest mountain in the Iberian Peninsula. 79 slopes with a total length of 84 kilometres can be reached with 24 lifts (cabins, chair lifts, and one drag lift). A themed slope has been set up for children: ‘pista del mar’.
