The San Sebastian International Film Festival, following hot on the heels of the Venice Film Festival, is underway. From 17th to 25th September, celebrities will flock to the Basque city to celebrate the world of film.

This year, at the famous La Concha beach, the Donostia Award will go to Johnny Depp and Marion Cotillard for their contributions to the film world. Sigourney Weaver, star of Alien and Ghostbusters, is the face of the festival, adorning the official poster this year.

Spanish stars on the red carpet

Following their appearance at the Venice Film Festival, Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz will also be at the San Sebastian event.

There are 16 films, two-thirds of which are from Europe, running for the highest award, the Golden Concha.

Cogesa Expats

Spain’s contributions include the highly anticipated The Good Boss, a gritty comedy starring Javier Bardem. Competencia Oficial – a comedy drama starring Banderas and Cruz – and directed by Argentinians Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn, also features.

Finally, the festival will be introducing new cinematographic names, like up-and-coming talent Alejandro Amenábar, who will be premiering his series ‘La Fortuna’. The series follows the story of long-lost treasure that resurfaces from the bottom of the sea.

Sustainable fashion

Sustainable fashion will also be present at San Sebastian Festival’s 69th edition in the shape of recovering textile, in this case from the red carpet. The carpets are made from recycled materials which will be turned into clothing once the event is over.

The presenters, actors, dancers and directors of the galas will wear fashion made in Gipuzkoa and the Basque Country. Keeping the creations local will certainly help an industry hit by the pandemic.
