PALOS DE LA FRONTERA – On Tuesday something remarkable happened on an Andalucian beach in the province of Huelva. A European penguin was found there. However, the beast was not in very good shape. So, the police caught it and took it to a veterinary clinic.
There it is being treated for malnutrition. According to sources from the municipality of Mazagón in Palos de la Frontera, where the penguin came to the beach, the incident took place on Tuesday, April 25. The police received a report that the animal had been sighted near chiringuito Costa Colón.
“Remarkable Fact”
The municipality speaks on Facebook of “a remarkable fact”, given the high temperatures recorded in the province this spring. However, they do indicate that “it is not the first time that a similar sighting has been made.” Previously, this seabird was only seen in the Atlantic waters in northern Spain.
European penguin
The ‘pingüino alca’, European penguin or penguin of the Northern Hemisphere is common on rocky islands or coasts in the North Atlantic and is not often seen in Spain. In Europe, it is estimated that there are between 519,000 and 1,070,000 of these animals, with a growing trend.
The physical features of this bird include an average length of 38-41 centimetres, a black-coloured back and a white belly, similar to the common penguin.
