ALICANTE – It seems it is not only the Canary Islands suffering from intense precipitation as a result of the tropical depression Hermine. But it is also fierce on tonight (Sunday) along the southern Spanish east coast and Balearic Islands. As such, a red weather warning is in force in places.
So severe that the weather institute Aemet has given a red warning (maximum risk) to the northern part of the coast of Alicante and to Campo de Cartagena in the region of Murcia. Other parts of the regions of Valencia, Murcia and the Balearic Islands are assigned code orange (major risk).

Region is ready with manpower
The town of Pego (Alicante) already had a hard time on Sunday. In four hours, 121.2 litres of precipitation per square metre of rain fell. In Murla, 85.2 litres per square metre fell in just one hour. The Emergency Coordination Centre of the Valencia Region has all its manpower ready for the pre-emergency situation. This is due to the predicted heavy rainfall on the coast. In the interior of the province and the south coast, the warning level currently remains orange and yellow for rain and storms.
In addition to Pego, it also rained unusually hard and heavy in the following areas;
- Ràfol d’Almúnia (Alicante) with 65.4 l/m2
- 53.6 l/m2 in Pedreguer (Alicante)
- 50.4 l/m2 in Font d’En Carrós (Valencia)

Various incidents
As a result of the rain, the Alicante Provincial Fire Brigade Consortium has had to respond to various incidents. These include traffic accidents and minor flooding in houses. And also cars that got stuck in the Marina Alta and Baix Vinalopó regions.
For the north coast of the Alicante region, more than 40 litres of rain per m2 are forecast within an hour and 130 l/m2 in 23 hours. For the south of the coast of Valencia, there is a chance of 40 l/.2 in an hour.
Orange and yellow alerts
In addition to code red for the north of Alicante and the Campo de Cartagena, code orange and yellow applies to the rest of the provinces of Alicante and Valencia, and the northern interior of Castellón has been warned about rain and storms. Code orange applies to all islands of the Balearic Islands (Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca) due to intense rain and storms.
The warnings apply until 6.00 am Monday morning.
