International Women´s Day began in 1911 and is celebrated around the world as women continue to struggle for basic human rights and gender equality.
According to IWD official website, they have many missions and initiatives to help to promote gender equality, including recognising women in tech, building inclusive workplaces to allow women to thrive, and forging women’s empowerment worldwide.
From challenge comes change, so let´s all choose to challenge
This year, the official theme is “Choose to Challenge” to raise awareness that a challenged world is an alert world. As individually, we are all responsible for our own thoughts and actions – all day, every day.
We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. Likewise, we can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. However, collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.
Online Make It Happen Summit
Costa Women in Spain are organising an ONLINE “Make it Happen” Summit to honour International Women’s Day. The event takes place over three days throughout March, and has various speakers helping to empower women in business. Furthermore, they will also address issues regarding women and tech and helping to create a balanced home-working life environment. Additionally, the event is suitable for women with all sizes of business.
Online events 11th, 25th & 30th March
The first day of the event takes place online from 3pm on Thursday 11 March. The online facilities include the main stage area for the speakers, break out rooms for on-two-one networking, a sponsor’s area as well as a virtual exhibition section where you can chat and connect. The other dates of the event are 25th March and 30th March. Women in business can attend all three dates, or they can choose which one or ones suits them best. Due to the event being online, speakers are from all over the globe. Including New York, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Spain.

Speakers at the event will tackle different subjects including tech, confidence in selling, dealing with the menopause, personal branding, business vision boards, how to survive and thrive, the need to succeed, how people perceive you and much more.
There are more and more companies and large organisations realising the value of equality in the workplace. And as such, we are seeing more women in top jobs.
IWD marches
In 2019 IWD marches took place throughout the country with crowds estimated at over 350,000 in Barcelona and 200,000 in Madrid. Information on the 2020 march can be found in our previous article.
Spain is addressing gender equality
Spain has done a lot over recent years to address the situation. According to Forbes, in 2018 Spain became the world’s most female-centric government with a share of 65% female ministers in Pedro Sánchez’s cabinet. The socialist acting prime minister appointed 11 female ministers out of 17 when he came to power in June 2018.
In addition, the Spanish Congress became the most equal in the EU with 47.4% female representatives (166 deputies out of 375) after April elections this year.
That meant Spain surpassed countries like Sweden and Finland in terms of female representation.
Spain in top 10 best countries for gender equality
And as recorded in the World Economic Forum report was rated one of the most improved countries and now sits in the top 10 of best countries in the world for gender equality.
