Brits are purchasing properties in Spain as they ‘work from home’

Property reservations highest ever in September

Brexit may have put a few more hurdles in the way for Brits wanting to move to Spain. However, record numbers for buyers of Spanish holiday homes in September were recorded this year. The property market is on the up.

For those determined to enjoy the Iberian lifestyle, Brexit has just caused a few more headaches around paperwork. It has not, however, stopped them from buying property in the Spanish hotspots of the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Balearic Islands.

Builder Taylor Wimpey España is reporting record-breaking reservation figures for Spanish holiday homes in September.

More September reservations than ever

Taylor Wimpey España took more property reservations than any September since it was founded in 1958. In fact, the numbers for September this year are treble those from the same month in 2019.

Sales and marketing director Marc Pritchard put this down to surging demand from UK second home buyers. There is also an increase in domestic Spanish buyers keen to buy second homes.

Pritchard said October reservations also look promising. “Britons are free to fly with fewer restrictions and there is growing confidence about buying homes in Spain once more.”

Working from home trend driving sales

The change in work practices, with more people able to work from home, is also driving sales up. Pritchard said, “Many Brits are now free to work from home and if they buy a property in Spain they can do so with even greater geographical flexibility than before.”

And why are they choosing Spain? The British market is overheated, with prices in rural areas rising exponentially. Therefore, Spain offers better value for money. Add to that a guaranteed hot summer and the good quality of life, and families can re-balance following the pandemic.

Golden Visa an option for easier residency

Whilst apply for residency involves a lot more paperwork than pre-Brexit, there is an easier route for those with cash to spend. Buyers spending €500,000 or more on a property can apply for a Golden Visa.

This visa opens up the whole of the Schengen area to British buyers, as well as ensuring that taxes are lower.
