Primavera Sound normally takes place over two weekends each spring in Barcelona’s Parc del Fòrum. However, because the city council did not give permission for an extension to the festival, there will be a second edition in Madrid from 2023 in addition to Barcelona.
The music spectacle takes place next year on June 1, 2, and 3 in Barcelona. The event will then move to Ciudad del Rock de Arganda del Rey, Madrid on June 8, 9, and 10. The last two year´s Primavera Sound was cancelled due to the pandemic. Now, Barcelona’s city council will organise the original version one more time at the Parc del Fòrum event and leisure complex, on the city’s north coast.
Also after 2023 two editions of Primavera Sound
According to festival director Alfonso Lanza, problems arose with the city council of Barcelona at the end of last year. As a result, they looked for alternative locations in Spain, including Madrid. The Madrid regional government, the municipality, and also the management of the event location offered all the facilities to get the festival to the Spanish capital. The involved parties negotiated so well that they quickly could confirm the arrival of Primavera Sound to Madrid. The intention is the music festival will take place for a longer period after 2023 in both Barcelona and Madrid.
Lanza said he certainly didn’t want to say goodbye to Barcelona, but was happy with Madrid as an added location. According to the festival director, the existing cultural similarities between the two cities are not always visible. Therefore, Primavera Sound can contribute to change that. The edition in Madrid will also not be inferior to the edition in Barcelona in terms of the format. However, Lanza does not know yet, whether the programming will be the same at both locations.
Purpose-built festival venue
Ciudad del Rock in Arganda del Rey, 30 kilometers from Madrid was especially built for major music events like Primavera Sound. In particular for the Madrid edition of the international Rock in Río festival that took place here in 2008, 2010, and 2012. The Barcelona- edition of Primavera Sound, unlike in Madrid, takes place in the centre of the city.

The first Primavera Sound (‘Spring Sound’) took place in 2001 in Barcelona. Since then the festival has grown into one of the largest music festivals internationally. Every year, bands and artists from different musical genres perform, including alternative rock, indie rock, noise rock, and electronic music.
