Golden Spanish film couple Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem are nominated for an Oscar for best female and best male lead in the films ‘Madre  Paralelas‘ and ‘Being the Ricardos‘ respectively.

In other categories too, Oscar nominations went to productions from Spain. Composer Alberto Iglesias is nominated in the Best Original Music category for ‘Madres Paralelas’. Alberto Mielgo and Leo Sánchez are competing for an Oscar in the Best Animation Short Film category for their film ‘Limpiaparabrisas’.

Not the first Oscar

Moreover, Prime Minister Sánchez and Deputy Prime Minister Díaz congratulated the five Spanish nominees. Furthermore, for Bardem and Cruz this is the fourth Oscar nomination of their careers. Bardem previously won an Academy Award for Best Actor in the 2007 film ‘No Country for Old Man’. Cruz won the Academy Award for Best Female Lead. This was when she portrayed the character María Elena in Woody Allen’s ‘Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona’ Allen from 2008. At the end of last year, Cruz won the Copa Volpi at the Venice Film Festival for her role in ‘Madres Paralelas’.

However, there is one favourite tipped to win at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27 in Los Angeles. This is a western film, “The Power of the Dog” by director Jane Campion. It received no fewer than 12 nominations. These include the categories Best Film, Best Direction, Best Leading Role (Benedict Cumberbatch), and Best Original Music. Campion is the first woman to be nominated twice for an Oscar for Best Director. However, it is not yet known which celebrity may present the award ceremony at the end of March.

With 10 nominations, Denis Villeneuve’s film ‘Dune’ also stands a good chance of winning an Oscar in the categories Best Picture, Best Original Music, and Best Makeup and Costume Design.

Competition

Penelope Cruz will compete for the Best Actress Oscar against actresses Jessica Chastain (“The eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The lost daughter”), Nicole Kidman (“Being the Recardos”), and Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”). Bardem has competition from Benedict Cumberbatch (“The power of the dog”), Andrew Garfield (“Tick, tick…Boom!”), Will Smith (“King Richard”) and Denzel Washington (The tragedy of Macbeth”).
