Busquets tests positive for covid ahead of Euro 2020

FOOTBALL – Just a few days before the start of the European Championship, panic has arisen within the Spanish squad, spilling over to UEFA. One of the Spanish national team regulars, Sergio Busquets, tests positive for Covid.

Shortly after his positive test, the midfielder went by ambulance to an address where he will quarantine. These measures have been determined within the organisation by the Ministry of Health and UEFA. Busquets hopes he will be released soon and be fit enough to rejoin the European Championship.

Spanish trainer calls up four extra players

Trainer Luis Enrique, however, takes into account that Busquets and possibly other players will disappear due to a possible contamination. He called on four new players earlier this week: Brais Méndez (Celta de Vigo), Rodrigo Moreno (Leeds United), Pablo Fornals (WestHam United) and Carlos Soler (Valencia). They will join the training in the coming days.

Squad and staff test negative for Covid-19

Since Busquets’s positive test, the team has been in isolation. The Spanish news site La Sexta.es wrote the rest of the Spanish squad and coaching staff all tested negative.

Spanish squad to receive priority vaccination on Wednesday

Earlier this Monday, the staff of Spain announced all the squad will receive the Janssen vaccine on Wednesday. The Janssen vaccine is a single dose. On Tuesday morning, the decision to accelerate the vaccination of Spanish players and staff will receive the green light from the Ministry of Health in Spain.

Despite the fact the rest of the team and staff have tested negative, they will also remain in isolation on the Las Rozas football campus for the next few days, the Spanish news site RTVE.es reported on Monday.

Spain will field the under-21 team in their final pre-tournament friendly against Lithuania.
