MADRID – A 51-year-old man is the first person in Spain to be officially diagnosed with the new omicron variant. He had returned from a trip to South Africa on November 28 after a transfer in Amsterdam. This has been confirmed by the health board of the region.

However, the man is doing well with only minor symptoms and is, therefore, in quarantine. The microbiology department of the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid reported Monday afternoon that it had discovered the first case of the omicron variant has been diagnosed in Spain.

Moreover, as we write, there are 13 cases in Portugal and dozens across Europe. Therefore, the arrival in Spain of the new mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus seemed only a matter of time. Despite this, the government decided on Monday to take new measures to try to fence off the national territory and minimise the threat posed by the variant as much as possible.
