Now the older age groups have received at least one dose of vaccine, the coronavirus is spreading mainly among the unvaccinated young people in Spain. The number of infections is rising rapidly, especially in the age group 12 to 29 years.
With the increase in the number of infections among young people, the average incidence (number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants) in Spain rose to 107 last Tuesday. It was 100.1 on Monday. Among people in their twenties, the average incidence at 251 is more than double the national average.
Increase in the number of infections with delta variant
2.5% of the infections in the past 14 days are due to the mega-outbreak among young people in Mallorca. The restriction relaxation, in combination with the end of the school year, has also caused many outbreaks in other places in Spain. As a result, the percentage of infections with the delta variant (which according to the European authorities is 60% more contagious) has also increased.
Classification by age group shows success of vaccination campaign
The Ministry of Health reported 7,000 new cases of infection and 40 deaths last Tuesday. For the first time, the ministry has broken down the number of new infections by age category. This clearly shows the effect of the vaccination campaign. At least 25 million inhabitants of Spain have received at least their first shot and 17 million of them also the second.
The number of infections continues to fall among the over-40s. Among the over-70s, the incidence is not higher than between the ages of 17 and 22. In the sixties (in this group 55% still have to receive the second dose) the incidence is now at 43, in the fifties at 52 and in the forties at 103. However, the latter shows a rapid decline. 85% of all people in their forties in Spain have now received their first vaccination.
Among the people in their thirties, the group now being invited for a vaccination appointment, the incidence increased slightly in recent days. However, it does not exceed 143 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The incidence is steadily decreasing among children under the age of 12. 80 out of 100,000 children in this age have the corona virus.
According to experts, partying young people do not cause a new corona wave
According to experts, the increase in infected young people in Spain will not cause a new corona wave. Nor will pressure on hospitals increase. However, they believe the effect of Covid-19 on young people should not be underestimated. People under the age of 30 still end up in hospital with serious symptoms.
Since the relaxation on June 22, around 600 under-30s have been admitted to an IC ward. 80 of them did not survive the effects of Covid-19. After the mega outbreak in Mallorca, an 18-year-old had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.
