MADRID – The heat, which is hellish, especially for regions in the Spanish interior, does not give any respite. Over the weekend, thermometers across most of the country will once again show high temperatures above 40ºC.
Only the northwest of the peninsula escapes it. Temperatures of up to 43 degrees are expected in some parts of the centre and south of the country. In the Ebro and Guadalquivir valleys, temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees even in the shade.
In most of the country, high temperatures will be constant. But they will rise in the Balearic Islands and the east and south of the peninsula. Currently, six autonomous communities are on orange alert;
- Andalucia
- Aragón
- Madrid
- Castilla-La Mancha
- Extremadura
- Catalonia
Temperatures in these areas can expect to be between 37 and 41 degrees.
Little cloud is also expected around the Strait of Gibraltar and in the north of the Canary Islands, where an isolated storm in the mountains is possible. In the Pyrenees, there can be local thunderstorms with even hail. Strong winds are expected in the far west of Galicia.
Hot Saturday at the Mediterranean
Temperatures in the Mediterranean will be stifling on Saturday. In the Cantabrian area, temperatures remain lower again and fluctuate around 25 degrees.
In the middle, south and southwest of the peninsula, but also in areas in the northeast and on Mallorca it will be more than 35 degrees and in the valleys of Guadiana and Guadalquivir even more than 40 degrees. The minimums will generally fall in the middle and northern half of the peninsula and will experience little change or slight increase in the rest.
Code orange
In addition, orange warnings due to high temperatures in Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura remain in effect, while for the communities of Castilla y León, Balearic Islands, Aragón, Madrid, Catalonia and Murcia, code yellow is in effect due to heat between 36 and 38 degrees.
Sultry Sunday
Sunday will be the hottest day in most regions. The thermometer will again indicate stifling temperatures, which will be especially high in Andalucia, Catalonia and Aragon. Maximum temperatures are rising in the Canary Islands and will be around 35 degrees over the weekend.
The mercury will also rise in the north and east of the peninsula, especially in the upper reaches of the Ebro, Basque Country and Navarra. The minimum will rise in the Canary Islands and the interior of the northern half of the peninsula.
Intense heat prevails
In the rest of the country, little will change: intense heat will prevail.
Dry and sunny weather is expected next week in most of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, except Galicia and the Cantabrian area, where it will be cloudy and with some precipitation, generally weak, accompanied by showers or storms in the Pyrenees and the south of the Iberian system.
