The new Spanish Ministers have a challenging task ahead of them, particularly the Health minsiter
On Wednesday, King Felipe VI of Spain appointed and swore in the new Ministers for Health and Territorial Policy. Carolina Darias is the Minister of Health with Miquel Iceta as Minister of Territorial Policy. Darias was formerly Minister of Territorial Policy, of which Iceta – former party leader of the PSC – is now in charge. Darias in particular, as the new Minister of Health, has a challenging task given the current situation in Spain.
Private ceremony for new Spanish ministers
Spanish news site La Sexta reported on the ceremony that took place at 9am Wednesday in the Zarzuela Palace. Due to the pandemic, only the new ministers, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, King Felipe VI and Justice Minister Juan Carlos Campo attended.
Challenging task for new Spanish Minister of Health
Illa announced his resignation as Minister of Health during Spain’s heaviest Covid wave. He was Minister for only a year and will now focus on regional elections as leader of the Catalan PSC party. Darias takes over Illa’s challenging portfolio, as Spain faces an average of nearly 900 infections per 100,000 inhabitants. As a result, Spanish regions announced new measures earlier this week.
It was also announced that several Spanish regions will have to stop or adjust their vaccination campaign due to delayed deliveries from various manufacturers.
First words from new Minister of Health
Shortly after her inauguration as the new Health Minister, Carolina Darias said: “The fight against the pandemic is a brutal war. There is a need to reduce the transmission of the virus and I am confident that we will achieve this. I therefore consider it necessary that there is more room for prevention and I ensure that there will be room for dialogue. ” Darias spoke to her predecessor: “I will follow the path taken, Salva, and strengthen cooperation and continue to make shared decisions.”
